Health and safety in care (or care homes) is a requirement by those providing care to ensure the workplace and the practices they undertake is safe for all involved. HSE (a government body) regulates and investigates incidents that take place in care. In England, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has responsibility for patient and service user health and safety for providers registered with them.

Health and safety legislation often known as Health and Safety at Work act 1974 (HASAW or HSW) is the main piece of legislation for the UK. It places the responsibility on the employers to use a health and safety policy and make arrangements to manage health and safety in the workplace.

It is through this policy that the company demonstrates its commitment to good health and safety practice. The policy must be followed by all employees and sets out the statutory minimum required by employers to provide safe working conditions for employees. In care homes, this applies to all those in care as well as volunteers and visitors on site.
